WHO HAS THE SCHOLARSHIP HELPED?

Over the years, the Cornelia A. Bregman Memorial Scholarship has supported the educational goals of many women pursuing a wide variety of careers.  The diversity of past scholarship recipients includes single women, single mothers, married women (with and without children), who have pursued certificates or degrees in the areas of teaching; nursing and other medically-related fields; paralegal services; and management and administrative-related careers, among others.  These women had something in common: they set clear goals and were determined to better themselves and their families by educating themselves.

One of the first scholarship winners was a mature woman who had never worked outside the home.  Left suddenly single and needing to support herself and her family, she enrolled in a course to become a court reporter.  Because her program was not connected to a college, she was not eligible for student loans.  Our scholarship helped her complete her program and begin a well-paying career. Another scholarship awardee was a single mother of teens working as a classroom teacher's aid. She was more than half way through a degree to become a teacher herself.  The additional financial support allowed her to complete the program sooner and begin earning money to pay off her debts and assist her children in their own college studies.  The demand for nurses and desire to help others inspires many women to enter this field.  The Capital Region Women’s Network scholarship has assisted several students returning to complete or advance their nursing credentials.

IN REVIEWING APPLICATIONS, THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE LOOKS FOR:

-   A complete, clear, and honest application
-   That you have set clear, achievable, goals
-   Your plan to achieve your goal or goals
-   The potential or likelihood that you can/will achieve your goal(s)
-   Your financial need and situation
-   Challenges that you may have faced or are now facing
-   Your need for education or training to increase your skills (not simply professional development)

CURRENT STATUS AND HOW TO APPLY

One recent awardee told us that she submitted her application, never thinking she would be considered... so do not hesitate to apply if you are eligible!

Please note that a personal interview is required of the finalists.  The successful candidate will be notified on or before June 30 of the scholarship year.  The $2000 award for 2013 will be disbursed to the winner in equal installments of $1000 each, in September 2013 and January 2014.
